Cooking With Toddlers This Fall: Easy Apple and Pumpkin Recipes Little Hands Can Help With

Fall is the best time of year to cook with little kids. Apples, pumpkins, cinnamon, warm muffins. The whole house smells like something good, and toddlers get to be part of it.

Yes, it's messier. Yes, it takes longer. But the stirring, pouring, and "I did it!" moments are worth it. Here's how to get set up, what jobs toddlers can actually do, and three easy fall recipes to start with.

1 Set Up the Counter First

The biggest thing that makes cooking with toddlers work is getting them safely to counter height, with room to move.

A few setup tips:

  • Use a sturdy stool on a level floor, with its non-slip pads on.
  • Push it right up against the counter so there's no gap to step into.
  • Keep it away from the stove. Set up prep work on a different stretch of counter.
  • Teach kids to stand in the middle of the step and keep their weight centered.
  • Stay within arm's reach the whole time.

We designed the Double Stool for exactly this. It's wide enough for two kids to stand side by side, so siblings can help at the same time without fighting over one step.

One mom of a 2- and 4-year-old told us she feels much more comfortable with it at the kitchen island than with the helper tower her girls used to sit on the edge of.

2 Kitchen Jobs by Age

Every child is different, but here's a good starting point:

Ages 2 to 3

  • Wash fruit and vegetables in a bowl of water
  • Tear lettuce or herbs
  • Stir cold ingredients
  • Pour pre-measured ingredients into a bowl
  • Sprinkle toppings

Ages 4 to 5

  • Mash bananas or cooked apples
  • Measure with cups and spoons
  • Spread with a butter knife
  • Crack eggs (into a separate small bowl first)
  • Scoop batter into muffin liners

Ages 6 and up

  • Peel with a vegetable peeler, with supervision
  • Read a simple recipe out loud
  • Use a kid-safe knife on soft foods
  • Help set timers and check on the oven with a grown-up

3 Three Easy Fall Recipes to Start With

Apple Nachos (No Cooking)

A grown-up slices 2 apples thinly. Kids arrange the slices on a plate, drizzle with warmed sunflower seed butter or yogurt, and sprinkle with granola, raisins, or mini chocolate chips.

Kid-Friendly Pumpkin Muffins (Makes 12)

  • 1 cup pumpkin purée
  • 2 eggs
  • ⅓ cup maple syrup
  • ¼ cup melted butter or oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1½ cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1½ teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Kids can pour and stir the wet ingredients in one bowl while a grown-up mixes the dry ones in another. Combine, scoop into a lined muffin tin, and bake at 350°F for about 18 to 20 minutes (12 to 14 minutes for mini muffins), until a toothpick comes out clean. Grown-ups handle the oven.

Cinnamon Applesauce

A grown-up peels and chops 6 apples. Kids help add them to a pot with ½ cup of water and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Simmer (grown-up job) for about 20 minutes until soft. Once it cools, kids can mash it with a potato masher.

4 Make Room for Two

If you have more than one child, you already know the "I want to stir!" fight.

Give each child their own job and their own spot at the counter.

The Double Stool's 22.5-inch-wide platform gives two kids room to stand together. One family told us their 4- and 7-year-olds fit on it comfortably side by side.
