Our Materials

From the mill to your home, we at Blueberry and Third have gone to great lengths to ensure that the products we use are acquired through sustainable means and that all products meet or exceed the safety standard set forth by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Wood

Our wood is 100% birch plywood and poplar hardwood

Poplar is one of the fastest growing trees in the world and thus easily grown in a sustainable manner without the need to disturb or clear-cut old-growth hardwood forests. When available, we choose birch plywood that is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, which "ensures that products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits" (https://us.fsc.org/en-us/certification).

No urea-formaldehyde (UF) is used in the manufacturing of our plywood

Our plywood manufacturer does not use UF in the production of our plywood and arrives fully-cured.
UF is a chemical commonly used in the manufacturing of plywood and is usually the culprit when the term "off-gassing" is used. When UF is used, free-formaldehyde is given off and can be dangerous to young developing minds.
As such, our plywood is CARB 2 (California Air Resources Board) and TSCA Title VI Certified, which both set allowable limits for formaldehyde emission for composite wood products.

Finishes

Water-based and Low-VOC

All of our finishes are water-based and low-VOC (volatile organic compound). Our products come fully-cured with no off-gassing.
